Essential Steps of Every E-commerce Website Development Process

2 minutes Read

Starting an e-commerce platform is no child’s play. It can become quite overwhelming. With its various aspects like design, layout, visuals, quality, and more, it can, in general, look like a huge and formidable task. The development process is going to set the tone for your website. It is half the battle.

When you look at the entire developmental stage as a whole, it can feel chaotic. However, if you carefully segregate the various steps, it becomes more manageable. Here is how you can divide your development process into different parts to track the progress and complete it as smoothly as possible.

Step 1: Planning

It is the first-ever step in the entire e-commerce journey as well as the development stage. Therefore, it is essential to take your time with the entire process. Before starting the entire website development process, use the planning stage to create a blueprint for the entire journey.

Decide on what features you want, what information you are going to add, where will each specific piece of the website go, and so on. Before the actual coding part begins, having an answer for all the above questions is crucial to avoid reworking and too many changes.

Step 2: Defining the Scope of the Project

Defining the scope of the project lets you maintain a budget. In this stage, you can decide what the limitations of your project are and where you can afford to stretch it. Do you really need to use expensive languages, or will open source products be a good starting point? Ask such questions about everything on which you will spend.

In this phase, go through the plan and see where you can pull the reigns if things are getting a bit out of control. Think of the potential roadblocks and be ready with the plan B.

Step 3: Designing

The design of your website is something your customers are going to associate your brand with the most. So, it is crucial to think deeply about the color, logo, layout, etc., so that it enhances your brand. Think about your target audience and design something that will appeal to them.

Those cases are rare when the first design is the right design. Try and test out different designs and see how it goes with your brand ideology. Think about the customer experience as well.

Step 4: Coding

This is the actual phase where developers will write the code for the website. Since you have a clear-cut plan and a fixed design, it will become relatively simpler for the developers to write the code. Try not to rush the process so that minimal errors or changes are required.

Step 5: Testing and Deployment

We’re nearing the end of the development process. Testing the written code is very crucial, and every website needs to go through it. Ensure that you have done everything to find bugs and errors. The testing step in the e-commerce website development process ensures that the store has no glitches and works just like you intended it to. Once you are confident that there are no major bugs and errors, you can deploy the code.

So, these were the major steps in the e-commerce website development process. Which step has been more challenging for you?
