Beginner’s Guide to Progressive Web Application

2 minutes Read

Google introduced us to Progressive web apps. And now, everyone is eager to use it. They have gained huge popularity among companies like Pinterest, OLX, Aliexpress, Trivago, Forbes, etc. These companies have begun testing the actual capabilities of the progressive web app technology.

But, first things first, What is PWA?

A progressive web app is a web application that can be used as both a mobile page and a web page for any device. A PWA is fast, increases engagement, and is highly reliable. It is created by fulfilling the requirements on Google’s checklist.

So basically, they are apps that are written in web technologies, i.e. JavaScript, CSS, HTML, etc., so they function and look like web pages as well. These PWAs are visible on search engine pages. They are linkable and have native mobile app features like offline availability and push notifications. PWAs also use the hardware of the device in the same way as the native apps.

Now, let us look at some of the characteristics of PWAs.

For online businesses, one of the most significant requirements is that it needs to be fast. Be it an e-commerce store or an infotainment website; site speed is very important. Moreover, the majority of people are using smartphones these days to go online. And if the page takes more than 3 seconds, then half the visitors abandon their search.

The conversion rate is directly connected to the page load time. This means brands have to optimize both the speed and efficiency of the website. PWAs do both. Once they have loaded, they can adapt to the user behavior smoothly.

What makes an app or a website reliable? That they can be accessed no matter how strong or weak the internet connection is. A progressive web app can work offline which means that users will have a stable and non-interrupted journey. So, if it is an e-commerce website, users can continue browsing product catalogs even if they are disconnected from the internet.

A progressive web application can access a device’s features. This means that it can provide an enhanced user experience and customer engagement is no more an issue. PWAs can be accessed on a browser and can also be pinned to the user’s home screen.

Moreover, businesses can use push notifications for offers, announcements, discounts, and more to keep users engaged. Also, if a customer has abandoned their shopping cart or left their journey incomplete, the push notifications can remind them about it. This increases customer loyalty as well.

How to make it a part of your business?

A progressive web app does not need to look after every single requirement from the checklist. 75% of the requirements are enough. Businesses can build a PWA from scratch, or they can also utilize ready-to-use solutions. There are various frameworks like PWA Studio, Vue Storefront, and more that can reduce your time, cost, and efforts to implement progressive web apps.

So, if you want to incorporate PWA in your business, then you can choose either way to do it. Which one would you pick, making PWA from scratch or using ready-to-use solutions?
